The only way you haven't heard about the immensely popular Pirates of the Caribbean movies by now is if you were actually living on a deserted island for the past 9 years. Even then I do believe you would have more than likely received a message in a bottle of sorts, advertising the filming or release of yet another thrilling sequel to these special effect filled adventures, starring Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow.

In 2003 we where given our first taste of this action packed comedy with the release of "The Curse Of The Black Pearl". A fantasy adventure film directed by Gore Verbinski, based on the very popular Walt Disney theme park ride of the same name.

Filming of the hit movie began in October of 2002 and wrapped up by March of 2003, during the filming, as the budget continuously rose, the movie was threatened to be canceled, though mind's were quickly changed when Bruckheimer brought out the concept art and animatics.

With the help of an amazing cast including Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Jonathon Pryce, Geoffrey Rush and many more very talented performers, the first in this series was a huge success, big enough in fact, Walt Disney Pictures announced that a trilogy was already in the works.

Fast forward now to the year 2006, and the release of the second installment of the assumed trilogy, after a 3 year hiatus between the first movies release and the second movies production start, it was decided to film part's 2 and 3 back to back. With the success of the first film, the cast and crew immediately signed back on for the next two installments in the series.

It was no easy task for the writer's of this very popular franchise, knowing that using the same cast from the original would mean there would be no freedom to create different characters and situations, like several other sequel's have been known to do. When discussion on the plot for the next two movie's arose, they initially wanted to go with a fountain of youth story, but eventually the decision was made to follow up by introducing the Flying Dutchman, the Kraken and the well known character of Davy Jones, all of which were mentioned several times in the first movie.

The second movie, "Dead Man's Chest" began filming in late February of 2005 wrapping up in March of 2006, immediately following was number three "At World's End", managing to finish their filming 10 month's later in January of 2007, finally bringing the trilogy to an end.

Surprise, only 3 months after the wrap up of the "Pirates Of The Caribbean" trilogy Disney bought the right's to a novel by Tim Powers by the name of "On Stranger Tides", and with that a fourth film was officially in the works. The novel was originally discovered by Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot during the filming of "Dead Man's Chest and "At World's End" and it was decided to use it as the premise for the fourth installment in the multimillion dollar franchise.

The latest movie is thought to be more of a standalone movie, therefore being able to bring in a great, new lineup of character's. Incorporated into the film, from the novel, were such things as the Fountain of Youth, mermaids and even Blackbeard himself. With the addition of new character's, a new cast was also in order, the new film brought in the talent of Ian McShane as Blackbeard and Penelope Cruz as his daughter Angelica.

Returning to their roles were Depp, Rush, McNally and Ellis, somewhat keeping with the original movies basis. The fourth film had been given a lower budget than the previous films, leading to the use of cheaper locations an less special effects than we had become accustomed to, but was filmed in 3D, with cameras much like the ones used in the filming of Avatar. Filming of this movie began in June of 2010 and finished up in mid November of the same year.

So there you have all of the movies to date in the very successful "Pirates Of The Caribbean" franchise, leaving us wondering if it's really over at all. It is said that Disney informed their stars, from the fourth installment, to keep their schedule open for a possible fifth and sixth segment, again being shot back to back.

Terry Rossio confirmed his role as writer of the new movies in January of 2011, but without his previous co-writer Elliot at his side. Depp has already agreed to return as Captain Jack and Orlando Bloom has expressed interest in coming back also if the offer is made.

It's been made clear that the summer of 2012 is the goal, to begin production on the fifth installment and it is thought that Marshall will return as the movie's director after the success of "On Stranger Tides". With any luck the new film will be just as successful as the other installments in this hugely successful series.
